. romney must instead set the record straight in a presidential tone firm, respectful, but not deferential. joining me to talk about it from washington, richard goodstein, a democratic strategist who helped get al gore ready for the debates in 2000. on the phone from nebraska, brett o'donnell who is debate coach for mitt romney for part of the republican primary season. good afternoon to both of you gentlemen. >> good to be with you. >> let me start with you. tell me about the balance that romney has to strike, calling out, calling out president obama without appearing to be unfair or perhaps even nasty. >> well, i think it's all a matter of tone and language. and for governor romney, i would describe it as being respectfully but passionately aggressive. so in the way he refers to the president, referring to him as mr. president, with all due respect, but he also can't let that put him into a defensive posture where he doesn't -- i agree with karl rove, actually call out the president's policy. so i wouldn't phrase it as calling out the president, but calling out the president's policies.

the presidential seal at his podium. now mitt romney was elevated to president obama's level. i was reminded in 2004 when john kerry was challenging george w. bush and we saw a similar debate performance where the challenger came out swinging, did very, very well. the incumbent president was a little bit on his heels mainly because sometime you're not used to being challenged by somebody in that type of setting. so we move to the next debate. it seems like mitt romney did very well on style, although substance might have been a different matter. >> speaking of substance, a lot of people thought this debate was more informative, but did these issues and ideas connect to the voters? >> i think so. you look at this abroad, there were so many statistics that were at issue. i did think it was a very substantive debate, but going on the substantive part, i think the next 24 hours or so, the obama campaign has the opportunity to seize on some of the facts that mitt romney was citing. one of the things he talked about, he said my tax plan isn't going to benefit wealthy high income americans, but eve

as promised, here is fact checking from last night's presidential debate. starting out, romney's claim that he would not raise any taxes on middle class americans. the first problem with this is that it is just the latest in a series of flip-flops. first he promises tax cuts across the board then he says don't expect any big tax breaks because he's also getting rid of deductions. now he says he will fight for middle class tax relief. as the president pointed out last night romney plans on paying for tax cuts by closing loopholes but he still will not say which ones and even if he does close them, that still doesn't pay for his $5 trillion worth of tax cuts. that means he would basically have to get rid of middle class deductions which effectively raises middle class rates. next up, healthcare. yep. romney really made a death panel reference, referring to the independent payment advisory board which does have the power to force medicare cuts. but it is explicitly prohibited from rationing care or restricting benefits so no
